Globalstar, Inc. (Globalstar) is a provider of mobile voice and data communications services globally via satellite. Globalstar�s satellite communications business, by providing critical mobile communications to the Company's subscribers, serves principally recreation and personal; government; public safety and disaster relief; oil and gas; maritime and fishing; natural resources, mining and forestry; construction; utilities and transportation. As of March 2, 2012, the Company used 36 in-orbit satellites providing service and 24 active ground stations, which it refers to as gateways, to offer voice and data communication services. As of December 31, 2011, it served approximately 486,000 subscribers. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company's consumer retail product lineup emphasized the SPOT satellite global positioning system (GPS) messenger and the SPOT Connect. Globalstar discontinued further production of SPOT Communicator and SPOT HUG during the third quarter of 2011.
